04.09.2011

On September 3, a garbage-collecting event was held in Ulan Ude as part of the Baikal Day. The event was organised by the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal and the Ministry of Natural Resources of Buryatia.

Over 300 volunteers walked to the Selenga River, the major affluent of Baikal, took ecological brown-paper bags for waste, gloves and rakes from the representatives of the Fund and started cleaning up the river banks in their native town from the garbage left by careless citizens.

Volunteers of all ages including students, entrepreneurs, employees and householders were happy to wear blue bandages and badges decorated with the logo of the Fund, a white snow seal. All of them understand that this unique inhabitant of Lake Baikal, just like people, needs a clean environment to live in. This is why the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal believes that the main task of the Baikal Day is to teach people to preserve the environment and Lake Baikal as one of the greatest treasures of nature.

During the Clean river banks event, volunteers collected about a hundred bags filled with various anthropogenic waste: packaging, plastic, aluminium and glass beverage containers, disposable cutlery etc.
The Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal is an active participant of events for preservation of Lake Baikal. It strives to popularise the Baikal Day celebration and supports ecological initiatives.
