Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal took part in the VIII Russian Festival of Science

From 11 to 13 October 2013 the VIII All-Russian Festival of Science took place at the Lomonossov Moscow State University, where the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal presented the exhibition on Lake Baikal and its research.

The exhibition was divided into three thematic sections on the FPLB expeditions. The stand of the international research expedition “Mirs at Lake Baikal” presented the information of the scientific discoveries made as a result of diving of the Manned Submersibles “Mir-1” and “Mir-2”. As part of the expedition there were carried out the studies of flora and fauna of Lake Baikal, of way out of underwater hydrothermal fluids and mud volcanoes, the definition of reserves of gas hydrates, the examination of the places of the outputs of hydrocarbons and their background level for water pollution assessment and prediction of hydrocarbon emissions.

The section on the Swiss-Russian research expedition “Trans-Eurasia flight: Leman-Baikal” told about the study of Lake Baikal using ultra light motorized trikes (ULM). For the first time in order to research the unique facilities of the Baikal natural territory there was used the technique to study the water surface with the help of remote sensing equipment installed on the ULM.

Photo exhibition on comprehensive expedition of students of Faculty of Geography of Lomonossov Moscow State University illustrated studies in Barguzinsky, Pribaykalsky and Severobaykalsky areas of the Republic of Buryatia. During the field seasons of 2012-2013 the scientists and students of the faculty fulfilled a large amount of work aimed at preserving the unique ecosystem of the Baikal natural territory, the development of tourism and recreation in Buryatia.

On 12 October a demonstration of the popular documentary of the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal “To the Depths of Lake Baikal”, filmed by the results of international scientific expedition “Mirs at Lake Baikal”, and the documentary “Beyond the Ice”, shot by the film studio “Baikal Cinema” with the support of FPLB took place at the House of Culture of Moscow State University.
