Forum on research of Selenga-Baikal region took place in Germany with support of FPLB

On October 1-3 in Leipzig (Germany) in Helmhold Institute of Ecological problems second scientific forum for Selenga-Baikal research took place. Main organizers of this event were Doctor Daniel Carte (Helmhold Institute) in cooperation with doctor Sergey Chalov (the MSU, Faculty of Geography) with support of the FPLB. Leading Selenga-Baikal experts from Russia, Mongolia, Germany, France, Switzerland, Sweden and USA took part in this event. It is necessary to mention the reports made by Dean of Faculty of Geography, first VP of the RGS, academic RAS N.Kasimov and by researcher from the Polytechnic school of Lausanne (Switzerland), Doctor Y.Akhtman, professor of the Earth science division of Rice University (the USA) Jeffrey Nittra, Leman-Baikal expedition coordinator from Switzerland side, deputy head of Limnology Center of the Polytechnic school of Lausanne Natacha Pache.

Forum like this had already taken place in Genève, Switzerland in 2012. At this time main topics for discussions were rational use of natural recourses, especially in Baikal basin and Selenga River, creation of platform for making uniform decisions for nature protection. Doctor Y.Akhtman presented results of second season of international expedition “Trans-Eurasian flight: Leman-Baikal”.

According to positive results of the conference it was decided to continue holding events like this, particularly in Moscow in 2015 and Ulan-Bator in 2016.
