Scientists-geophysics from Chita took part in the flights over Baikal

11.08.2014

After long period of rains the study of Lake Baikal using trikes again resumed in the scientific base of the Baikal Institute of Nature Management SB RAS in Istomino. Three researchers from the Laboratory of geophysics of cryogenesis from the Institute of Natural Resources, Ecology and Cryology SB RAS (Chita) arrived at Lake Baikal. Laboratory of cryogenesis is deal with studying of the electromagnetic properties of ice and frozen dispersed medium for remote sensing and determination of the internal structure of the medium in a wide frequency range from tens of hertz to a hundred gigahertz.

The researchers plan to continue their observations started in the winter period of the International scientific expedition “Trans-Eurasian flight: Leman Baikal” 2014. With two radiometric receivers (wavelength of 8 mm and 2 cm) mounted on the ULM, scientists are exploring the water surface of Lake Baikal and the coastal zone. In winter, the researches noticed the unfrozen patch of water in the ice of Lake Baikal. The main task - to compare winter and summer data obtained by radiophysical methods, to determine the presence of gas outlet in places of the unfrozen patch of water, what will predict the thickness of the ice in the next winter season.

For the first time, scientists are studying the surface of forests and fields with the radiometric equipment. The collected data will help determine the humidity and aridity of the soil, as well as the dominant forest types.
