The Guardianship Board of the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal (FPLB) now includes Mr Dmitry Mezentsev, Governor of Irkutsk Region and Chairman the Irkutsk Region Government.

The participation of Irkutsk Region Governor in activities of the FPLB Guardianship Board and his support of the Fund is another step towards the effective protection of Lake Baikal.
Mr Mezentsev is well aware of the Fund’s work and highly values its large-scale projects for researching and protecting Lake Baikal.

Exactly one year ago, on 1 August, 2010, Mir-1 manned submersible went down Lake Baikal near the Olkhon Island with Dmitry Mezentsev, Irkutsk Region Governor, on board. The submersible was piloted by Anatoly Sagalevich, Chairman of the FPLB Technical Board and Hero of Russia.

At the end of last year, Dmitry Mezentsev, Irkutsk Region Governor, signed the Decree to develop the Law On Regional State Support of Lake Baikal Protection and Preservation. The Law will define the participation of the Irkutsk Region in state protection of Lake Baikal, forms and terms of supporting companies whose activities help preserve and improve the unique ecological system of Lake Baikal.
