Resolution of International scientific conference “Baikal – the world treasure”

After discussing issues related to the protection of Lake Baikal, which is part of the World Heritage List of UNESCO and prospects of scientific research in order to preserve the lake ecosystem and summing up the results of the expedition Mir at Lake Baikal the participants of the International scientific conference Baikal - the world treasure noted:

Baikal is recognized as a unique natural object and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List on the four criteria.

In recent years, the intensity and quality of scientific research for the preservation of the ecosystem of Lake Baikal have considerably increased. The main researches were made during the expeditionMirs at Lake Baikal. For the first time in history scientists from 12 countries of the world came together to conduct researches on Lake Baikal.

ExpeditionMirs at Lake Baikalhas made a significant contribution to the development of the national and world fundamental science in geology, geography, limnology, geochemistry, geophysics, biology, etc.

During the expedition the scientists managed to get large amounts of data that allow to significantly expand the representation of both the genesis of Baikal, and contemporary processes occurring in it.

The unique Russian technology and engineering solutions embodied in the Deep Submergence VehicleMirplayed the main role in the scientific and technical support of the expedition. Experiments with the participation of the International Space Station were conducted for the first time.

The International scientific conference Baikal - the world treasure recommends:

To continue to research the ecosystem of Lake Baikal and the Baikal region with the increased involvement of foreign scientific institutions and scientists, and the introduction of advanced environmentally safety technologies.

To the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal to work with UNESCO on the establishment of Lake Baikal International Center of UNESCO category 2 on environmental innovation and sustainable development.

The International scientific conference Baikal - the world treasure informs about the proposed initiative of the Fund for Protection of Lake Baikal to study the possibility of the establishment of an Ombudsman on Lake Baikal to coordinate the conservation of Lake Baikal.
